Colemans On the Go was started by Mike and Kathy, our friends in the Coleman Trailer business. They contacted many of us who had purchased Coleman brand tent trailers and asked if we would like to be part of a loosely knit group of people who owned one of these “tent trailers” and really enjoyed laid-back camping. After an initial meeting campout in September of 1982, in the pouring rain at a KOA in Watsonville, we decided that we did have something in common other than just owning tent trailers. Several meetings later, a core group worked out what the club was going to be about, agonized over bylaws, established a dues structure, and planned future campouts. COG, Colemans On the Go, was born in March 1983 with the first official outing to Brannan Island State Recreation Area, again in the rain, but we enjoyed the company and knew we were on to something. This first campout began some of the traditions that we continue today including the Saturday evening potluck and raffle.

Over the years we have watched each other’s children grow up and have developed friendships, some of which continue outside club activities. As some of our lives changed so did our needs related to our RVs, and in the late 1990s Coleman discontinued the manufacture of tent trailers passing the torch to Fleetwood. In 2005 a unanimous vote by the membership modified the name of our club to acknowledge that not all members owned a Coleman or a tent trailer. COG became both Colemans On the Go and Campers On the Go. Membership remains open to all owners of tent trailers. To join you must own a tent trailer, however, members are grandfathered into the club even if they change RV configurations, and friends/family of current members are eligible to join regardless of RV type.
